About Grand Strand Doula
My story starts in July of 2003, when I found out I was pregnant with my first. I knew two things: My body was made to birth babies and my breasts to feed them. That birth story is not unlike many other women in the United States; find out you’re pregnant, see an Obstetrician, take a hospital based “Lamaze” class, get an induction date, have a baby, feed baby. Except, my birth left me with horrible feelings of inadequacy and breastfeeding was a flop.
Fast-forward to January of 2006. I’m pregnant again. I’m bound and determined to do things differently, and I find a hospital based midwife. A couple of my girlfriends have used a program called HypnoBirthing. I look into it, and read the book. A friend hands me the most well-worn copy of Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin. I cannot get enough. Sadly, I lose that baby, but a fire is ignited. I quickly made plans to attend a HypnoBirthing(tm) educators training in Los Angeles, California. I go through the training, and start teaching. Families want me to attend their births. Then I have baby number 2 at home attended by some very lovely midwives, and breastfeeding was better.
In the fall of 2007, we moved to Southeast Missouri, and no longer satisfied by just teaching, I decided to branch out into doulaing. I am always learning and have since added Lactation Counseling, Full-Spectrum and Postpartum Doula to my skill set.
