About Hynes Childbirth Services
I began to learn about the process of childbirth in 2006, when I was newly married and envisioning the beginnings of my family. Previously, I had never given babies a second thought. I began to learn about all the procedures typically experienced by a birthing mother in hospital. Like every new mom, I was concerned about pain, but it seemed to me that each medical intervention added more discomfort, pain and distraction to the pure birth experience. I decided that I had more confidence in my own physical and mental strength to handle natural, unmedicated homebirth with a midwife, than I did in the routine procedures and managed care offered by an Obstetrician at a hospital.
In 2007, with the expert assistance of my beloved midwife, Nicole Lavallee of Coastal Birth Services, I birthed my 9.5 pound son with a nuchal hand and triple nuchal cord at my home. In 2010, I birthed my second son, a 10 pound chunker with shoulder dystocia at home. Both births would surely have ended in an episiotomy or cesarean section in a hospital. With both births, I did not tear and I was never separated from my babies (my worst birth fear).
After the birth of my first son, I was inspired to share all that I had learned with other new moms. I wanted every mom to know that by empowering themselves with information and taking control of the decisions involved in childbirth, they can achieve lifelong satisfaction with one of the most important experiences they will ever have. Childbirth is not something to be feared. It can be a source of strength throughout the challenges of parenthood, and throughout life.
I proudly became certified as a birth doula through DONA International. In addition, I acquired credentialing as a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator. In 2013, we began offering 12 hour Lamaze Childbirth Preparation Courses at Secret Lotus Yoga Studio in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, providing evidenced-based information about each of the decisions leading up to childbirth. Independent childbirth education is a critical aspect of empowering parents to make the safest and best decisions for their families.
I created my childbirth preparation series with a unique approach. I wanted my students to have access to experts who can provide instruction and guidance throughout their pregnancy, and throughout life. Students learn basic prenatal yoga poses from a professional yoga instructor. They get tips on massage to alleviate pregnancy and labor discomfort from a licensed massage therapist. They hear how to facilitate breastfeeding and pumping from a certified lactation consultant. They have the opportunity to ask questions of a professional midwife. I am proud to offer the most comprehensive childbirth education within the coastal Carolinas.
