This seems to be an age old question that has many different answers. In my professional opinion and after all my research, the answer is YES!
Yes. It is okay to have a massage by a Certified Prenatal Massage Therapist during your first trimester. If you are calling around and are told otherwise, then you are probably not speaking with the right professionals. Are there times that you should avoid a massage during your first trimester, yes, but you can address those issues with your massage therapist. If you have a perfectly healthy pregnancy and are not having many symptoms common with the first trimester, then a massage would be one of the best things you can do for yourself. After all, you are growing a little human and your body is working in overtime right now. Treat yourself to a little reward and treat that little sweet baby you are growing.
There are some questions you may want to ask before you find the right massage therapist during these very precious times. Of course, verify that your massage therapist is certified in prenatal massage. Ask them where they had their training and research. I learned this the hard way. When I was pregnant with my first, I asked the massage therapist this question during the massage and she answered, “I don’t even remember what the name of the website was, but it was an online certification.” Unacceptable in my book!
Be sure to ask how long have they been practicing massage therapy and how long they have been certified in prenatal massage. Though we all have to start somewhere and it is certainly fine if they do not have many years of experience, if you have ever had pregnancy or fertility issues, you will want to find a therapist with more experience to ensure you have a safe and satisfying massage.
If you are pregnant, find the perfect massage therapist by researching online, interviewing potential therapists, and asking for recommendations from friends and family. Many benefits to prenatal massages await you and it’s time you take advantage of them!
